MIES (Switzerland) - More than 250 members of the worldwide basketball community have engaged in a webinar which revealed how FIBA and longstanding partner Genius Sports are transforming and elevating the global game to new levels using the power of AI technologies in a sports data revolution.
A demonstration of how FIBA is actively delivering on its strategic objective centered around Sustainability and Innovation, the webinar also underlined its work to Empower National Federations with AI technologies.
Still available to view here, the main aim of the webinar was to inspire National Federations, Leagues, and Clubs to harness technology moving forward and realize a number of growing benefits.
One of the most engaging and popular elements of the webinar was the live demonstrations of AI-driven augmented broadcasts, which can expand fan bases and create new commercial opportunities for Federations.
Additionally, the most compelling insight was the roaring success of the latest innovations being rolled out at the FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup in Lausanne, which was heralded as a triumph for fan engagement.
FIBA and Genius Sports unveiled augmented, data-driven live streams of games for fans watching the competition on YouTube. With real-time game insights including player names, shot probabilities, and defender distances, it helped to create a more immersive experience for basketball fans worldwide.
Meanwhile, as National Federations, Leagues, and Clubs look to engage with basketball supporters and consumers in more dynamic and sustainable ways, embedding technology into their day-to-day operations can prove to be a potential game-changer.
This includes using automated data collection tools to support competitions and to reduce administrative workloads - something which could potentially streamline operations. Webinar participants were also shown ways that new performance insight and analysis technology can assist coaches, players, and referees in decision-making and development. One of the most interesting aspects was a discussion on how officiating will become empowered by AI technologies and not replaced by it.
Other takeaways from the webinar have zoomed into the successful accessibility of best-in-class technology. Just as FIBA LiveStats became an integral part of the basketball ecosystem, the introduction of AI-powered tools and applications, via GeniusIQ, looks destined to be a totally collaborative process between FIBA, National Federations and Leagues.
Finally, as technology continues to accelerate and evolve at a rapid pace, the webinar also highlighted the shared mission of FIBA and Genius Sports in working together and innovating to continually grow the sport globally.
