New agents excel in representing basketball players, safeguarding image rights, managing finances, and providing career guidance.

GOLD COAST (Australia) – The latest cohort of aspiring agents has successfully passed the FIBA-Licensed Agents Test, held in November on the Gold Coast, Australia.

This annual event, a staple in the FIBA calendar, saw a diverse group of candidates from various backgrounds come together to earn their credentials as FIBA-Licensed Agents.

The role of a FIBA agent has grown exponentially over the past two decades. These licensed officials are pivotal in representing players, safeguarding their image rights, managing their finances, and providing crucial career and transfer guidance.

"The importance of agents in the basketball world cannot be overstated,” said FIBA Executive Director – Oceania, Amanda Jenkins. “These agents will ensure that players can focus on their performance on the court while their off-court interests are managed appropriately."

This year's test in Gold Coast was a testament to the globalization of basketball, with participants hailing from multiple countries, each bringing unique perspectives and experiences. The course covered various aspects of player representation, including contract negotiation, financial planning, and legal issues, ensuring that the new agents are well-equipped to handle the complexities of the profession.

One of the newly licensed agents, Campbell Magnay from Brisbane, shared his thoughts on the significance of the role and education opportunity.

"I'm currently a Rugby Union and league Player Agent, and having a brother playing basketball professionally in Australia, I have witnessed how his agent operated, and I think I can add value in the basketball arena, not just in Australia but across the globe," Magnay said.

"It’s the agent’s job to get players opportunities worldwide, and as a former professional athlete, I understand both sides of the coin. Now, working full-time as an agent for the past two years, I have seen the ups and downs of professional sport and the agency landscape. I’d like to be able to and continue to help the younger generation excel in their short careers as professional athletes really excites me."

Another FIBA Agent candidate, Bradley Waters from Melbourne, expressed his passion for the sport: "I want to become a FIBA player agent because I care deeply about the sport of basketball. Becoming a FIBA player agent allows me to continue to look after the integrity of the sport. My success today is due to my reputation and the clear care I have for my clients. Being a player agent allows me to continue this care into the future for those players."

As the basketball world continues to grow and evolve, the need for skilled and dedicated agents becomes ever more critical. These professionals play a key role in the careers of players, helping them navigate the often-complex landscape of professional sports. With the successful completion of the FIBA Agents Test, the new wave of agents is ready to take on these challenges and contribute to the sport’s continued success.
