Ghana Basketball Federation is expecting big things for 3x3 in the future.

ACCRA (Ghana) - The Ghana Basketball Federation is expecting big things for 3x3 in the future as it begins delivering the actions of an exciting development plan that was expertly crafted as part of a FIBA Plus project.

The Federation embraced the specialist project planning advice provided by FIBA, which has drawn on the experience and skills from both the global headquarters in Switzerland, as well as the FIBA Regional Office in Africa.

The implementation stage of the 3x3 development plan is underway and that means tangible results will soon be flowing in respect of elevating the sport further in a nation that is already on the rise when it comes to basketball. Much of the work has been centered on having a laser-focused approach to mastering existing FIBA 3x3 tools, as well as:

    • Training 3x3 referees and coaches

    • Increasing the numbers of 3x3 players by organizing more 3x3 endorsed events

    • Promoting 3x3 basketball to get more private and public funding

    • Having one team participating in an international 3x3 event in 2025.

Ato Van-Ess, the President of the Ghana Basketball Federation, is thrilled at the progress that is being made already and was keen to underline the significance of the support and guidance provided through the FIBA Plus initiative. He explained: "The steps we have taken so far in partnership with FIBA on the FIBA PLUS 3x3 Project are a testament to our commitment to the development of basketball in Ghana.

"Our collaboration with FIBA has been rooted in strategic planning, and through several constructive meetings, we have been able to define clear objectives and aligned activities that will guide the successful implementation of this project.

"The benefits we foresee for the Ghana Basketball Federation are immense. This project will not only popularize the fast-paced, dynamic 3x3 format, but also help us cultivate and nurture local talent at the grassroots level, create more opportunities for young athletes, and enhance our visibility on the international stage.

"We are building a sustainable platform that will elevate basketball in Ghana, attract investment, and inspire a new generation of players and fans, " continued Van-Ess.

"This is only the beginning, and I am confident that with the support of FIBA and the dedication of our team, we are on the right path to significantly transforming the basketball landscape in our country."

The FIBA Plus program enables National Federations to develop strategies that increase their capacity to organize, professionalize and commercialize basketball activities. It is also an essential component of FIBA's strategic priority to Empower National Federations.
