FIBA will continue to place innovation and sustainability at the heart of its activities for the period 2025-2029.

MIES (Switzerland) - FIBA's long-term commitment to delivering responsible governance, environmental stewardship and positive social impact across the global basketball community has been further boosted by the successful launch of a new Sustainability Strategy for 2025 to 2029.

Formally endorsed by the Central Board at its previous meeting held during December 2025 at FIBA's headquarters in Mies, the Sustainability Strategy is closely aligned with FIBA's strategic pillar of Sustainability and Innovation.

This focuses strongly on exploring pioneering solutions that not only enhance the game of basketball but also promote environmental stewardship and long-term progress throughout the basketball ecosystem.

The FIBA Sustainability Strategy has two spheres of dedicated focus. The first is FIBA as an organization and how sustainability will be successfully integrated into internal operations, the governance process and day-to-day management. The second is FIBA as an Event Owner and how sustainability principles will be successfully embedded into the planning, delivery and legacy of FIBA's major competitions - starting with the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2026 and the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027. Across both, FIBA's sustainability work will be concentrated on four distinct areas:

    1. Environmental responsibility - climate, resources, waste, mobility, biodiversity

    2. Social impact - safeguarding, integrity, DEI, women in basketball, youth development, community

    3. Governance - roles, policies, data management, guidelines

    4. Economic sustainability - institutional partnerships, commercial value, communication

While the FIBA Sustainability Strategy provides the long-term vision and framework, an accompanying FIBA Sustainability Action Plan sits alongside it and translates the Strategy into clear objectives, targets and Key Performance Indicators.

This also secures transparent progress monitoring and alignment with other international standards, including UN Sustainable Development Goals and the UN Sports for Climate Action Framework. FIBA is also actively encouraging all National Federations to familiarize themselves with the new Sustainability Strategy 2025-2029 and Action Plan. Not least because they will serve as references for future cooperation, including hosting requirements and development programs within the FIBA ecosystem. Furthermore, the dedicated FIBA Sustainability Team will be offering additional guidance, tools and opportunities for engagement. This will be made available to all National Federations seeking to strengthen their sustainability capacity or looking to integrate sustainability elements into national programs and their event organization.
