MIES (Switzerland) – A new tranche of prospective agents received a warm welcome at the House of Basketball as FIBA presented another important opportunity to work collaboratively and to play a key role in helping uphold integrity and fairness in the sport.
A total of 29 participants attended the FIBA-Licensed Agent test on August 7, with those present able to connect with FIBA's history and mission as they soaked up the experience of being at the Patrick Baumann House of Basketball.
This included taking a tour of the stunning Naismith Arena – the 1,000 square meter space which provides an exciting journey through the history and evolution of the sport.
The group was made up of a diverse mix of backgrounds, including former players. A total of 27 different nations were represented from right across Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas, with those present also able to use the gathering to network with fellow professionals.
In terms of the FIBA-Licensed Agent test itself, while candidates are encouraged to possess a strong knowledge on all FIBA regulatory frameworks, there is now an even stronger emphasis being placed on the importance of the FIBA Code of Conduct.
Not least because agents are almost always the first advisors to players and coaches, so knowledge and expertise around breaches are particularly essential.
As well as the Code of Conduct, other primary topics covered within the test focused on the eligibility of players, international transfers, anti-doping and registration. There were also questions relating to regulations governing players' agents, letters of clearance, and the Basketball Arbitral Tribunal (BAT).
FIBA Legal Affairs Senior Manager, Benjamin Schindler, who led the session during the day, commented:
Helping players navigate the complexities of professional basketball is naturally a primary aim for agents. So, it's important that we empower them to not only demonstrate their understanding of the rules, but to also encourage them to champion those rules with clients.
"We fully recognise that FIBA-Licensed agents form an integral part of the basketball landscape. Providing an opportunity to form a deeper understanding of FIBA's role and vision with a visit to the House of Basketball is very productive, since we all want to contribute positively to the growth of the global game."
The FIBA-Licensed Agents test in Mies follows on from 70 candidates gaining certification at two previous events held in Miami, USA, in November and April.
The next FIBA-Licensed Agents test is scheduled for January 2026 in the Philippines.
