"I learned from my dad, who is a big influence," Alatise shares, reflecting on how he was introduced to the sport. The inspiration came naturally, as he spent time watching his father’s games and being part of his basketball journey. This early exposure to the sport set the foundation for Alatise’s ambitions, including his dream of one day representing Samoa at the highest level. Embracing Challenges and Growth Being the youngest player on the team at the FIBA Oceania U15 Cup posed its own set of challenges for Alatise, but his determination and the unwavering support from his teammates helped him turn this into an advantage. "It’s quite difficult being the youngest on the team, but my teammates are supportive," he says.

Instead of feeling intimidated, Alatise found strength in his role and worked hard to contribute to his team's success. His story highlights the importance of camaraderie and mentorship in youth sports, as older teammates offer both support and guidance to help young athletes navigate these formative experiences. The lessons learned from these challenges go beyond just basketball skills. Alatise emphasizes how important it is to “not be scared and just be confident in what you’re doing.” His personal growth during the competition is a testament to how sports can help shape character in the face of challenging situations. The Joy of the Game Though competition can be intense, Alatise finds joy in the small, rewarding moments that come with the sport. Whether it’s sinking a basket or making a steal, these moments fuel his passion for basketball. "What brings me the most joy is making that basket and like getting a steal," he shares. It’s these joyful experiences that drive him to keep improving and striving toward his goals. His love for the game is further evident when he mentions his long-term aspirations: “I want to play college [basketball],” he says, with dreams of continuing his journey through higher levels of the sport. Looking Ahead: A Bright Future for Young Samoan Athletes The privilege of representing one’s country is something Alatise holds close to his heart. “Just keep on practicing and follow your dreams,” he advises younger players who aspire to follow in his footsteps. Through the FIBA Oceania U15 Cup, young athletes like Alatise are given the chance to play against the best in the region, all while developing the skills and mindset needed to succeed in the future. As Alatise’s journey shows, this competition is more than just basketball; it’s about forging a path toward greatness, not just for the players, but for the entire Oceania region.
