FIBA Oceania Board Meets in Singapore: Empowering National Federations and 3x3 Development
GOLD COAST (Australia) – The FIBA Oceania Board have met in Singapore during an eventful weekend that featured the FIBA Intercontinental Cup and the FIBA Hall of Fame Class of 2024 induction.
GOLD COAST (Australia) – The FIBA Oceania Board have met in Singapore during an eventful weekend that featured the FIBA Intercontinental Cup and the FIBA Hall of Fame Class of 2024 induction.
The following key topics were discussed during the FIBA Oceania Board meeting:
Empowering National Federations
The Board heard comprehensive reports on the strategic objectives including Empowering National Federations with the FIBA Plus Program in Fiji, grassroots basketball development, Basketball Without Borders, and the Mini Games to be hosted by Palau in 2025.
The FIBA Oceania 3x3 High Performance Camp was discussed at length with the benefits if the 3x3 format highlighted as a significant opportunity for member federations in the region.
Women in Basketball
Reports were received on Women in Basketball strategic deliverables with the regional online tournament coach course having over 50 percent female participants. The Board were also provided summaries of the Olympic events, Women’s World Cup 2026 Pre-Qualifiers and the FIBA U15 Oceania Cup.
The unveiling of the visual identity for the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2026 was recently announced on the 'Road to Germany' which was tabled alongside development opportunities in the region with Women in News and Sport through ABC International to further support the increase of fans consuming women’s basketball.
Develop Youth Basketball
The Board received updates on the development of youth basketball in the region through the Introduction to Youth Coaching Course and the development of a new Basketball for Good resource, Hoops for Equality.
Basketball for Good projects continue to thrive in Oceania with reports presented in collaboration with the TeamUp Program, PacifcAus Sports, and MFAT Youth Leadership.
Make 3x3 the Most Thrilling Urban Discipline
The Board were briefed on the success of 3x3 at the Olympics as well as the participation and success of New Zealand in the Nations League Asia plus their youth appearances at the U18 and U23 World Cups. Significant discussion was had around the growth of 3x3 with NFs hosting more 3x3 tournaments making them eligible for additional activity with the Asia Cup and Mini Games deadlines coming up.
In anticipation of the FIBA Oceania 3x3 High Performance Camp, 14 National Federations and over 100 athletes, coaches, and referees will be attending the inaugural program being delivered in partnership with Olympic Solidarity, PacificAus Sports, the Gold Coast Council and Sports Marketing International.
