Basketball's popularity is rising across Oceania thanks to grassroots programs supported by Team Up, and PacificAus Sports.

GOLD COAST (Australia) – Basketball participation across the region is increasing in the Oceania region with the ongoing support from Team Up and evolving Basketball For Good Programs, with 2025 shaping up to be another successful year.

Last year saw incredible strides in developing basketball at the grassroots level, with Hoops For Equality rolling out across the region with Fiji piloting the program, and Solomon Islands introducing to schools this year.

Aligning with FIBA’s strategic objective of Empowering National Federations through grassroots development, the regional participation growth is on the back of an increasing demand for the sport and regular program implementation.

“Our region is geared towards empowering National Federations in the most practical way possible, and under the Basketball for Good umbrella we are able to provide that support and direction,” FIBA Executive Director – Oceania Amanda Jenkins said. “Having programs to implement, and the feet on the ground to deliver is one thing, but the ongoing support of our partners, Team Up, and more recently, PacificAus Sports will further leverage our capacity.”

Participation growth in Oceania has been underpinned by the joint efforts and the increasing popularity of basketball across in the region. The commitment and hard work of our National Federation partners are instrumental in achieving these outstanding results. They are the driving force behind the growth of the game, fostering a love for basketball within their communities and creating pathways for future generations of players.

The Team Up Program, an Australian Government initiative, has been a crucial catalyst for this success. By providing support and resources, Team Up empowers FIBA in Oceania and our National Federations to deliver high-quality basketball development programs that are making a real difference in people's lives. These programs not only teach fundamental basketball skills but also promote important life skills, healthy lifestyles, gender equality messaging while contributing to inclusive communities.

This year, FIBA in Oceania remains committed to working closely with Team Up and National Federation partners to further expand the reach of our programs and create even more opportunities for people to experience the joy of basketball.

FIBA in Oceania is proudly supported by the Australian Government through Team Up, and PacificAus Sports, through the PacificAus Sports Program. Their support is vital in fostering the growth of basketball in the region and empowering grassroots initiatives.
