CHISINAU (Moldova) - FIBA Europe President Jorge Garbajosa and FIBA Executive Director Europe Kamil Novak concluded on Saturday a very productive trip to Moldova, providing a boost to the country’s future basketball development plans.
Mr. Garbajosa and Mr. Novak discussed at length matters related to development and the prospects of the country as a host of FIBA events with Alexander Abramciuc, the Basketball Federation of Moldova President.
The FIBA Europe duo then held talks with Dan Perciun, Moldova’s Minister of Education and Research, and Sergiu Gurin, Secretary of State at Ministry of Education and Research.
"President Abramciuc informed us about the different projects that he wants to develop in the country, together with the basketball ecosystem in Moldova, and we had a very fruitful meeting with the Minister and the Secretary to encourage them to encourage the government to support these projects," explained Mr. Garbajosa.
When asked by local media what Moldova needs to do in order to host big FIBA competitions in the future, Mr. Garbajosa replied: "You have all the conditions to do it, you have to prepare a good plan, prepare a god bid and the Board will examine it."
Moldova most recently played host to the FIBA U16 Women's EuroBasket Division C tournament in back-to-back years, 2018 and 2019, and reached the semi-final on both occasions.
