Ahead of the FIBA U17 Oceania Cups, participants in Apia learned elite photography and videography techniques for basketball coverage.

APIA (Samoa) – In conjunction with ABC International Development, Women in News and Sport (WINS) Program, FIBA hosted a Women in Basketball Content Creation Workshop ahead of the FIBA U17 Oceania Cup and FIBA U17 Women’s Oceania Cup.

Held at Samoa Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (SASANOC) and supported by PacificAus Sports, the workshop brought together seven local participants for training in sports photography and videography.

Designed to empower women in Samoa with professional media skills, the workshop offered hands-on development in capturing basketball action and storytelling through visual content. It formed part of FIBA’s broader Women in Basketball strategy to elevate female voices and representation across the sport.

“This initiative is about more than just media skills, it’s about creating space for women to shape the narrative of basketball in our region,” said FIBA Executive Director – Oceania, Amanda Jenkins. “We’re proud to partner with ABC International Development, the Samoa National Basketball Federation, and PacificAus Sports to deliver meaningful opportunities for women in sport.”

Participants engaged in practical sessions led by experienced mentor, and FIBA Content Creator, Roshan Uelese, learning techniques to shoot, edit, and share compelling basketball content. Workshop participant, and emerging Samoan photographer, Alisi Tavita said the workshop and experience has provided her with the technical knowledge to shoot more confidently.

“Being part of this workshop gave me the confidence to capture basketball in a professional way,” Ms Tavita said. “I learned practical skills in photography and videography that I can now use not only for sport but also in my community. It was inspiring to see women leading in this space, and I’m excited to keep building on what I’ve learned.”

The workshop also served as a launchpad for local content creators who will now have the opportunity to shoot at the FIBA U17 Oceania Cup and FIBA U17 Women’s Oceania Cup.

This initiative was made possible through the support of PacificAus Sports, whose commitment to gender equity and sport development continues to open doors for Pacific athletes and creatives across the region.
