“I understand how difficult these games are going to be,” he said. “I need to take that next step and become a more vocal leader. I need to encourage my teammates when it gets tough out there and use all my experience and knowledge of the game to help my team be successful.”
Worswick brings lessons from 2022 that he hopes will guide both himself and the younger players stepping into the squad.
“Every team we face will be different,” he said. “As a team, we need to quickly assess our opponent and adjust to give us a better chance of winning. When you step on that court, just do your best. Be confident in yourself and the hard work you put in every day. It doesn’t matter if you missed a shot or lost a rebound, just focus on the next play.”
It’s a mindset rooted in resilience, something Palau leans on heavily as a small nation competing on the regional stage.
Around him, Palau’s roster includes other returning athletes such as Jerry Edlach Ngiraremiang, and JT Ngirameong Timarong, who bring familiarity with the tournament’s pace and physicality. “It would be an incredible accomplishment for Palau Basketball,” Worswick said. “It’s been quite some time since Team Palau has been there, and it’s been a goal for many of us. Qualifying would help the growth of basketball on our island and bring more opportunities for the next generation of players.”

Palau will compete against the Federated States of Micronesia at the 2026 FIBA Micronesian Cup, hosted by the Guam Basketball Confederation in Hagåtña from August 14 to 16. The top two teams will qualify for the 2027 Pacific Games in Tahiti.
