MORONI (Comoros) – From July 26-29, the 2026 African Mini Basketball Convention brought together hundreds of young participants, coaches, and basketball delegates in Moroni, Comoros, for four days dedicated to learning, play, and the continued growth of Mini Basketball across the continent.
Organized with the support of the FIBA Foundation, the FIBA Regional Office Africa, and the Comoros Basketball Federation, the convention welcomed 470 children aged 5 to 12, who took part in a variety of fun and educational activities designed to promote health and well-being while introducing the fundamentals of basketball in an inclusive and engaging environment.
A key pillar of this year's convention was coach education, which remains at the heart of the Mini Basketball program. The event brought together 70 coaches, including 15 international delegates, representing twice the number of coaches who participated in last year's edition in Algeria.
Through a combination of practical and theoretical sessions, participants strengthened their understanding of Mini Basketball methodology and child-centered coaching approaches.
The sessions were led by FIBA experts Guillermo Calvo and Nour Amri, who shared their expertise and provided tools to help coaches create enjoyable, safe, and impactful basketball experiences for children in their communities.
Beyond the on-court activities, the convention also delivered valuable resources to support the continued development of Mini Basketball in the region. During the event, 500 basketballs were distributed, and 24 Mini Basketball hoops were provided, helping create more opportunities for young people to access the game long after the convention concluded.
The impact of the event is expected to extend well beyond Comoros. Coaches and international delegates will now return to their respective countries and communities to share the methodology through local clinics and grassroots initiatives, enabling the program to reach thousands more children across Africa and further strengthen the Mini Basketball movement on the continent.
Building on the momentum of the Moroni convention, the FIBA Foundation, the FIBA Regional Office Africa, and National Federations will continue working together to organize regional Mini Basketball Conventions and expand opportunities for children to discover the joy of basketball while learning important life skills through sport.
