BERLIN (Germany) - Fans at the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2026 have turned out in exceptional numbers, helping set a new Women’s World Cup attendance record.
A total of 236,015 fans attended the event in Berlin, surpassing the previous record of 145,519 spectators set at the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2022. This was despite the previous edition in Sydney, Australia featuring 38 games, compared to 36 games in the German capital.
The tournament has set a new benchmark, with an unprecedented average attendance of 6,556 spectators per game.
In Sydney, the Final between China and the USA drew 15,895 spectators and remains the most-attended Women’s World Cup game of the modern era. The 2026 edition also saw several sold-out nights at the Berlin Arena, which has a maximum capacity of 12,650 for this event.
The first edition of the Women’s World Cup was held in 1953 in Chile, with games played at the National Stadium on a specially-built wooden platform, and with a seating capacity of 35,000 spectators.
Records show that 30,000 fans attended the final-round game between hosts Chile and the USA. While there are no official figures that confirm the exact attendance, this remains the highest reported attendance for a Women’s World Cup game and for any women's national team basketball game.
More recently, the Paris 2024 Olympic Basketball Tournaments were a major attendance success. The women’s tournament alone attracted 513,838 fans across 26 games, averaging 19,763 spectators per game.
