BRIDGETOWN (Barbados) – To empower young girls through the game, FIBA Foundation Youth Leader Nakish Joseph in collaboration with the Barbados Amateur Basketball Association launched Project POOF with the support of the FIBA Foundation.
According to the Pan American Health Organization, the prevalence of overweight and obesity among the population aged 15 and older was 67% in the country in 2022. This is caused by poor nutrition and lack of physical activity in the community, which is further exacerbated by the lack of female participation in sports.
In 2024, the local sports scene witnessed an inspiring new initiative with the launch of Project POOF. Through the exemplary dedication of FIBA Foundation Youth Leader Nakish Joseph, this groundbreaking program aimed at improving the current situation and empowering young women through basketball.
A 4-week program combined athletic development, teamwork, and personal growth through a series of workshops, practice sessions, a 3x3 basketball tournament, and community engagement activities.
Project POOF kicked off with an online launch and workshop aimed at introducing participants to the program’s objectives and fostering a sense of community among players.
Featuring 43 women between the ages of 12 and 29, divided into seven dynamic teams, the program offered a unique platform for participants to showcase their talents and cultivate essential life skills.
Throughout the sessions, the participants improved their skills during practice sessions held on local courts. Coaches and mentors guided them through drills, team-building activities, and strategy development, emphasizing discipline, sportsmanship, and leadership.
The excitement peaked in December with a culminating 3x3 tournament. The event was a vibrant showcase of talent, determination, and passion as the young women battled on the court.
“Project POOF is more than just basketball,” said program coordinator and FIBA Foundation Youth Leader Nakish Joseph.
“It’s about creating opportunities for young women to grow as individuals and as a community. We want these ladies to leave the court feeling more confident, empowered, and ready to take on challenges both on and off the court.”
With the support of the FIBA Foundation, Project POOF has already made a significant impact in its first year, setting the stage for what promises to be an annual event fostering empowerment, unity, and the celebration of women in sports.
Aligned with FIBA’s strategic priority Women in Basketball, the FIBA Foundation promotes gender equality and women empowerment through its Basketball For Good projects, while supporting similar external initiatives.
