Nigeria's Elite Tigers to embrace the opportunity of a lifetime

    Short Read

The Abuja-based ballers are ready to fly the flag for African hoops on a historic global Masters stage.

MIES (Switzerland) - The truly worldwide appeal of the FIBA Masters Open 2026 will be perfectly illustrated by the presence of the Elite Tigers Basketball Club from Nigeria when they lineup for the historic first ever edition of the newly created event. Founded in 2020 and ready to compete in the 40 plus age category when they land in Greece, the Tigers are made up of retired and veteran players drawn from several different clubs in the capital city, with the majority coming from the Veterans of Abuja Basketball Club.

Coming together for this special landmark competition under one banner, they will represent a shared journey that is deeply rooted in experience, connection, and a deep love for the game.

The group is composed of players who share a long basketball history, with many having competed either together or against each other for many years.

Having initially heard about the event, the chance to take part in the inaugural FIBA Masters Open immediately resonated with the team and there was only ever going to be one outcome - representing Nigerian Masters basketball on the international stage. “This is an opportunity of a lifetime," claimed Tigers representative Victor Okor.

It opens the door for Nigeria to be part of a much bigger global basketball visibility.

Firmly united and with a clear sense of purpose and perspective, there is a simple motivation for the Tigers. It's to show everyone the importance of remaining part of the basketball ecosystem and highlighting how the sport remains accessible long after many people might actually realize. While staying fit and active helps to maintain health and discipline, it is not about chasing past achievements and glories. It's demonstrating that excitement, meaning, and contribution doesn't have to end, and sending a message to younger generations that basketball can be a lifelong journey with many chapters. "Basketball gives us the opportunity to stay connected and to give back. Being part of Masters Basketball allows us to remain active while contributing to the sport that gave us so much," insisted Okor. "We want to show our basketball space in Nigeria that the excitement does not have to stop when you retire."

Veterans of Abuja Basketball Club regularly run youth camps together to teach basketball to the next generation.

Elite Tigers will also have a balanced mindset heading into the tournament - intending to compete seriously while also soaking up the entire experience. Okor added: "We want to enjoy every moment and take part in every activity. You do not want to miss this." Beyond basketball, Elite Tigers are looking forward to discovering Greece. Exploring local culture, visiting tourist sites, and enjoying the setting all form an important part of the journey. A small group of family members and friends will also travel with the team. Finally, because Elite Tigers Basketball Club stands for growth and excellence, the team actively contributes to the local basketball community in Nigeria by organizing events that give young people exposure to the sport and insight into its wider value chain. That involvement goes beyond the court and creates new platforms, inspires participation and shows basketball can shape lives at every stage. Soon, they will be able to add to their legacy by showing the younger generation what is possible later in their lives, by sharing the life experiences they're about to embrace at the FIBA Masters Open.
