MIES (Switzerland) - The second edition of the FIBA Masters Open will be jointly hosted in Munich by the German Basketball Federation (DBB), the City of Munich, FC Bayern München eV, the Bavarian Basketball Association and FC Bayern Basketball.
Working closely with FIBA, the partners will all combine their extensive expertise and networks to deliver what promises to be another exceptional event for the global masters basketball community.
It will follow a highly successful inaugural FIBA Masters Open earlier this year in Greece, which brought together nearly 1000 players aged 40 and above from across the world - as well as many more coaches, officials, volunteers, family members, friends and fans.
Celebrating the power of basketball and its unique ability to unite people, the competition on the floor was accompanied by an inclusive festival atmosphere. Now destined to be replicated in Munich next year, the second edition of the FIBA Masters Open will once again contribute to creating special memories for those who attend.
Furthermore, underlining FIBA's commitment to a long-term participation strategy that strengthens its vision of one global basketball community, next year's edition will also feature a wheelchair basketball competition.
Patrick Mariller, FIBA Chief Operating Officer, stated: "Following the landmark first edition of the FIBA Masters Open in Greece, we are even more excited to now look ahead to the second edition in the wonderful city of Munich. The strong support from the Masters community and the growing interest from National Federations have demonstrated how enthusiastically the global basketball community has embraced this important new event on the FIBA calendar.
"Being able to announce Munich as the host city for 2027 marks another important step. We greatly appreciate the commitment and dedication of FC Bayern Basketball, supported by the German Basketball Federation, the City of Munich, FC Bayern München eV and the Bavarian Basketball Association, in hosting the 2027 edition. We would also like to thank them in advance for the hard work that now lies ahead. We know it will be an outstanding and unforgettable event for everyone taking part."
The FIBA Masters Open 2027 will officially get underway with an opening ceremony at Munich's BMW Park. Games will be played in various sports halls across the city, while Pineapple Park, FC Bayern Basketball's popular streetball location, will provide the perfect stage for the 3x3 competitions.
Germany's passion for the sport was highlighted recently at the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2026 in Berlin. The event broke attendance records and attracted unprecedented levels of engagement, while the Germany men's national team currently holds both the FIBA Basketball World Cup and FIBA EuroBasket titles.
Munich's Deputy Mayor for Sports, Verena Dietl, stated: "The FIBA Masters Open will bring basketball players from all over the world to Munich in 2027 and demonstrate that enthusiasm for sport knows no age limit. Munich is an international sporting city and an excellent host for events that bring people together. I wish all participants exciting competitions, a very special celebration of basketball and an unforgettable time in Munich."
Mithat Demirel, Vice President for Elite Sport, German Basketball Federation, added: "We are delighted that FC Bayern Basketball will host the FIBA Masters 2027 in Munich. Following last year's successful inaugural event in Corinth, which brought together more than 1,000 participants from around the world, it is fantastic to now bring this special international basketball event to Germany.
"With 15 age categories starting at 40+, the FIBA Masters Open impressively demonstrates that enthusiasm for basketball and sporting competition. The fact that Masters basketball is now being given a permanent international platform under the umbrella of FIBA is of great importance for the further development of these competitions."
Joachim Spagele, Vice President for Sports Development at the German Basketball Federation, said: "The DBB will support FC Bayern Basketball as a partner. Together, we aim to further develop Masters basketball, increase its visibility and provide participants from around the world with an outstanding basketball experience in Munich in 2027."
Adrian Sarmiento, Managing Director of FC Bayern Basketball, said: "We are delighted and honored that the FIBA Masters Open 2027 will take place in Munich. Together with the German Basketball Federation, the City of Munich, FC Bayern München eV and the Bavarian Basketball Association, we want to create an international celebration of basketball that brings people from all over the world together.
"We look forward to welcoming thousands of players, coaches, volunteers and basketball fans to Munich. Together, we want to celebrate the passion for our sport and the competition on the court, while at the same time giving our guests the opportunity to enjoy special cultural and social experiences in Munich."
Benny Folkmann, Managing Director of FC Bayern München eV said: "Hosting the FIBA Masters Open 2027 is further proof of the vibrancy and commitment of Munich as a sporting city, as well as FC Bayern München's ambition to be a strong supporter of basketball.
"It is extremely encouraging to see the associations and institutions involved joining forces for such an important event, and as a club we would like to sincerely thank everyone who has helped make this cooperation possible. With its inclusive and cross-generational approach, the event is a perfect fit with our club strategy. We are very much looking forward to welcoming the international basketball community to Munich."
