Los Angeles 2028 revised Basketball schedule highlights FIBA Executive Committee meeting

    A revised Olympic Basketball tournament schedule for 2028 will see games begin two days prior to the Opening Ceremony in Los Angeles.

    MIES (Switzerland) - FIBA's Executive Committee has met during the midst of an eventful period with both the women's and men's Continental Cups taking place from June to September, along with the successful completion of the U19 World Cups.

    The following topics were discussed:

    FIBA Continental Cups

    FIBA's Executive Committee approved reports on the 2025 FIBA Continental Cups, following on from the strong momentum generated by the recent women’s Continental Cups held across the regions.

    The FIBA Asia Cup 2025 concluded on Sunday in Saudi Arabia with Australia securing their third win of the competition. The FIBA AfroBasket 2025, currently underway in Angola, will conclude on August 24. Meanwhile, the FIBA AmeriCup 2025 tips off in Nicaragua on August 22, followed by FIBA EuroBasket 2025, which begins on August 27, hosted across four cities: Limassol (Cyprus), Tampere (Finland), Katowice (Poland), and Riga (Latvia), with the final phase taking place in Riga.

    FIBA Basketball World Cups – 2026 and 2027

    FIBA's Executive Committee received reports on the preparations for the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2026 in Germany and the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 in Qatar, including their respective Qualifiers.

    The FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2026 Qualifying Tournaments are scheduled to take place in March next year, with the decision on hosts for the four events set to be announced in September.

    The 24 qualified teams were recently confirmed following the completion of the Continental Cups which includes Mali, Nigeria, Senegal, and South Sudan who qualified from the FIBA Women's AfroBasket 2025; Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Puerto Rico, and the USA from the FIBA Women's AmeriCup 2025; Australia, China, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, and the Philippines from the FIBA Women's Asia Cup 2025.; and Belgium, France, Italy, Spain, and Türkiye from the FIBA Women's EuroBasket 2025. Germany will participate as hosts of the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2026, while Czechia and Hungary earned spots in the World Cup Qualifying Tournaments through the Pre-Qualifiers played last year.     Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games – Basketball

    The Executive Committee was given updates on the upcoming 2028 Summer Olympics, which included a revised Basketball tournament schedule that will see games begin two days prior to the Opening Ceremony in Los Angeles. This adjustment allows the Quarter-Finals to be played over two days and will also ensure that no game will start earlier than 12:00 PM, enhancing the overall experience for players, teams, fans and broadcasters.

    A report was presented on the highly successful FIBA 3x3 World Cup 2025 and the ongoing FIBA 3x3 Youth Nations League, which is currently being played across all regions.

    The FIBA 3x3 World Cup 2025 in Mongolia made history both on and off the court, breaking multiple social media records and setting a new benchmark for digital engagement. With millions of views and interactions across platforms, the event showcased the ever-growing appeal of 3x3 and Mongolia’s growing influence as a host nation.

    The FIBA 3x3 Youth Nations League continues to expand its global reach, with 93 countries involved in the 2025 season- up from 72 last year. The 2025 edition began on May 28 in Doha, Qatar and will conclude later this month in Debrecen, Hungary. The league serves as a qualification pathway to the FIBA 3x3 U23 World Cup, with each region winner earning a spot at the event, which will be held in Xiong'an, China, from September 17 to 21.

    FIBA Intercontinental Cup 2025

    The Executive Committee received a report on ongoing preparations for the FIBA Intercontinental Cup 2025. This year’s edition will take place from September 18 to 21 in Singapore, bringing together six continental champions for four days of elite international club competition.

    FIBA recently confirmed the line-up for the 2025 edition with reigning champion Unicaja of Spain taking part as well as 2024-25 BCL Americas winners Flamengo of Brazil; Japan's Utsunomiya Brex who clinched the BCL Asia 2025 title; National Basketball League (NBL) champions Illawarra Hawks from Australia; Libya's Alahli SC, who emerged as Basketball Africa League (BAL) champions in their debut season; and the NBA G League United.

    Develop Youth Basketball

    An update was provided on recent NCAA developments, and the Executive Committee has welcomed the publication of a Q&A designed to help international players and their families understand how these changes impact eligibility, contracts, visas, and career planning, enabling them to make informed decisions and avoid unexpected risks.
