Kenya's basketball community has lost one of its most inspirational figures with the death of Paul Otula, who served as president of the Kenya Basketball Federation until his death.
Mr. Otula died suddenly on May 1, his family announced.
In a statement, Kenyan Basketball Federation wrote: “Mr. Otula was a dedicated leader, mentor, and towering figure in Kenyan basketball. His passion, vision, and service to the game and the nation will never be forgotten.
“We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and the entire basketball community. Further details will be shared in due course. “May his soul rest in eternal peace.”
The President of the National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOC-K), Paul Tergat paid tribute to Mr. Otula.
The former Olympian wrote: “It is with profound shock and deep sorrow that we mourn the passing of a friend, colleague, NOC-K Executive Board Member, and President of Kenya Basketball Federation Mr. Paul Otula.
“A firm yet humble leader, Paul brought light to every space he served: academia, sport, and especially basketball. His legacy in youth development and sports administration will endure.
“He possessed a rare ability to build bridges, restore calm, and illuminate even the darkest of situations with wisdom and grace.
“To his family, colleagues, the Olympic Movement, basketball fraternity, and all who knew him, our heartfelt condolences,” Mr Tergat said.
Official basketball games played in Kenya on the weekend of Mr. Otula's death paid minutes of silence in honor of Paul Otula.
