Indonesia to host FIBA U17 Women's Basketball World Cup 2028 and FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup 2029

    Press Release

History awaits as Indonesia prepares to host the two prestigious FIBA youth events.

MIES (Switzerland) – FIBA has awarded Indonesia hosting rights for the FIBA U17 Women's Basketball World Cup 2028 and the FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup 2029.

It will be the first time in history that an edition of each showpiece competition will be held in Asia, bringing even more excitement and anticipation to the events.

The decision comes off the back of the country having been proud co-hosts of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 and was officially announced during a special visit to Jakarta this week by a FIBA delegation that included FIBA Treasurer Ingo Weiss and FIBA COO Patrick Mariller.

The delegation met with the President of the Indonesian Basketball Association (PERBASI), Budi Djiwandono; Secretary General of PERBASI, Nirmala Dewi; Minister of Youth and Sports of the Republic of Indonesia, Dito Ariotedjo; FIBA Central Board Member and Minister of State Owned-Enterprises of the Republic of Indonesia, Erick Thohir; and the Secretary General of the National Olympic Committee of Indonesia, Wijaya Noeradi.

Widely heralded as the biggest FIBA event in history, the appetite and passion for the sport in Indonesia shone through and was a significant factor in the runaway success of the 2023 tournament.

Now fans in Indonesia can look forward to welcoming the stars of the future. Both competitions provide the perfect platform for the cream of rising star talent from around the globe to showcase their skills.

The awarding of the hosting rights also builds on the enormous capacity for the continued growth and elevation of basketball in the country.

This was emphatically highlighted with the opening of a FIBA office in Indonesia last year, an essential step in developing and unlocking the huge potential of the sport. It is already playing a vital role in supporting basketball development at all levels, focusing on grassroots programs and empowering the local basketball community.

The confirmed U17 and U19 events in Indonesia continues the multi-year hosting model, introduced by FIBA in 2019. Encouraging National Federations to host consecutive Youth World Cups, it was put in place to maximize synergies and better organize and manage events - while also allowing National Federations to showcase their event-hosting capabilities on the global stage.

USA won the previous FIBA U17 Women's Basketball World Cup 2024 in Mexico

The decision also extends the confirmed list of destinations for FIBA's flagship youth competitions, with the hosts having already been confirmed for 2025 and 2026.

A decision on the hosting rights for the FIBA U17 Basketball World Cup 2028 and FIBA U19 Women's Basketball World Cup 2029 will be made in due course.
