MIES (Switzerland) - Most tournaments are remembered for who won, but the inaugural FIBA Masters Open will also be remembered for being the start of something far bigger - an unforgettable first chapter of an event dedicated to the 40+ global basketball community.
Thousands of players will be stepping out from July 4 to 12 in the Attica and Corinth region of Greece and writing their names into FIBA history.
Preparation for the FIBA Masters Open 2026 is steadily coming together as FIBA continues to work with the Hellenic Basketball Federation to create an event that will mark the beginning of something special. As excitement for the maiden event continues to grow, significant efforts are already being made behind the scenes to prepare the array of venues that will host the tournament.
Games will take place in facilities regularly used for high-level basketball in Greece, with the goal to provide participants with the best possible conditions, so they can fully enjoy the competition and experience FIBA Masters basketball at its finest.
Another key element in delivering a first-class tournament is the provision of high-quality officiating. FIBA is proud to be able to count on Elias Koromilas, one of the most respected referees in international basketball, to oversee the nomination of referees and table officials for the event.
His involvement reflects FIBA's commitment to ensuring that every game is played in a professional and well-managed environment, providing participants with the top-tier officiating standards and services they deserve.
Additionally, the health and safety of players taking part in the FIBA Masters Open is the top priority. Something clearly highlighted by the involvement of Dr. Peter Harcourt, Chair of the FIBA Medical Commission, who is supporting the planning of the event to help ensure comprehensive medical guidance is in place.
During the coming weeks, FIBA will share preparation guidelines designed to help players train safely in the weeks leading up to the start. Although all competitions will take place in air-conditioned venues with dedicated medical support, specific rules for the higher age categories will be in place. This follows the recommendations of the FIBA Medical Commission, which focuses on reducing risks and ensuring the safety of all participants.
But the FIBA Masters Open will be about more than just basketball. In Kiato, next to the 3x3 courts, a vibrant event hub is set to become the heart of the tournament, bringing the atmosphere to life during both day and night.
It's set to become a place where players and fans can gather, share stories, enjoy music, discover great food, and celebrate the global community that FIBA Masters basketball represents.
This is also underlined by teams heading to Greece from across the globe, with entries already confirmed from numerous European nations in addition to historic basketball countries like the USA and Australia.
Of course, each FIBA Masters Open 2026 team will carry its own history, with friendships built over decades, through unforgettable games and experiences, and with everyone bonded together through a shared passion for the sport.
