Fighting Irish ready to fly at the FIBA Masters Open

    Long Read

Team Ireland Masters are determined to make the most of the historic first edition.

MIES (Switzerland) - The 'Green Machine' is set to to click into a higher gear when no fewer than eight teams from the Emerald Isle take to the floor in Greece for the maiden FIBA Masters Open 2026.

With a 120-strong group of players and staff, all brought together and coordinated by the National Federation of Ireland, they will be a big presence at the inaugural edition as one of the most structured and unified delegations.

But this is more than about impressive numbers. The Team Ireland Masters are determined to showcase their national pride, history, identity and fighting Irish spirit - as well as the passion for basketball that cascades through every age category they represent.

It's been more than a decade since Basketball Ireland launched their initiative to give Masters players a high-level pathway to continue representing their country while staying active, competitive, and connected. It's a program built on tradition and commitment.

The pride of wearing an Irish jersey and representing your country will never decrease - Mike Murray.

It starts each season with open trials held in November, with squads progressively refined until the teams are selected. This process ensures both quality and inclusivity, bringing together players from all over the country - often serving as role models and ambassadors in their respective communities for lifelong sporting participation.

Many of the athletes share long basketball histories. Most have played together for years, often progressing through youth and senior levels - some even playing on the international stage. But whatever the journey, they all get to integrate into a group bonded by shared experiences and values.

Team Ireland Masters representative Mike Murray stated, "The pride of wearing an Irish jersey and representing your country will never decrease. Being part of the first FIBA Masters tournament is something special and will become a piece of history for our program.

"The quality of FIBA tournaments leaves nothing to chance. We know the venues, refereeing and overall organization will meet high standards."

Taking part in the first-ever Masters event organized by FIBA carries important symbolism for the Irish delegation. It represents not only competition, but recognition of Master's basketball as a structured, international discipline within the global basketball family.

Meeting teams from other countries and sharing the floor with them is one of the most anticipated aspects of the event. Team Ireland Masters will arrive with a competitive approach and focused mindset.

"If everything runs smoothly and we perform to the best of our ability, that already means success. Winning then becomes a bonus," added Murray.

Meanwhile, basketball is much more than a sport for Team Ireland Masters.

It is a social anchor and a lifelong passion. For many players, it remains their main social outlet and a central part of daily life. Offering the opportunity to stay fit, travel, reconnect with friends, and still compete at a strong level as the years go by.

The essence of Master's events lies in the friendships built over decades and the love of the game that never fades. Being able to compete against similarly aged opponents while still playing meaningful basketball creates an environment that is both challenging and deeply rewarding.

The 'Green Machine' will carry their colors and spirit with confidence in Greece, while also taking a moment to share a heartfelt message with other teams as they prepare for the challenge ahead.

"Just do it. This is the beginning of something new for Masters basketball, and being part of it from the start matters," declared Murray.
