Clubs from the Gulf and West Asia compete together in the Group Phase

BEIRUT – (Lebanon) The FIBA Regional Office-Asia on Wednesday, Oct 28, 2026 has announced that the much-awaited FIBA West Asia Super League (FIBA WASL) 2026-27 will tip off coming December introducing a new competition system bringing clubs from the Gulf and West Asia together in mixed groups in the Group Phase.

The new format will see 12 clubs from 10 countries – six from the Gulf Sub-Zone and six from the West Asia Sub-Zone – compete in the Group Phase, marking a change in the structure of the regional competition.

Champion teams of Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates form the Gulf Sub-Zone sextuplet while the champion teams of Jordan and Iraq will be joined by the champion and runner-up teams of Lebanon and Syria on the West Asia side.

The revised format represents a new chapter for FIBA WASL, bringing Gulf and West Asia clubs together earlier in the competition while retaining separate sub-zone pathways to the season-ending Final 8.

    Group Phase

These clubs will be drawn into two groups of six – each group comprising three teams from the Gulf and three teams from West Asia. Teams will play the usual home and away, giving every club a 10-game Group Phase schedule, with five games at home and five on the road.

    Final Phase

Following the Group Phase, clubs will be ranked within their respective sub-zones based on their results, regardless of the group in which they competed.

The top four teams from each sub-zone will advance to separate semi-finals to determine the Gulf and West Asia Sub-Zone champions. The Semi-Finals in each Sub-Zone will be played as follows

    • 1st-ranked club vs. 4th-ranked club

    • 2nd-ranked club vs. 3rd-ranked club

The winners of the Semi-Finals will progress to the Final to decide the champion team of the Sub-Zone and the losing semi-finalists will be involved in a play-off for the third place.

    Composition of Final 8

Under the new system, the top three teams from each Sub-Zone will advance to the FIBA WASL Final 8 where they will be joined by champions of India and Iran.

Details of official draw for the groupings of the Group Phase will be announced soon.
