FIBA to host test events for Automated Video and Tracking Solutions in Doha

    Short Read

Sports technology companies are invited to participate in test events this March, as FIBA continues to foster innovation.

MIES (Switzerland) - FIBA has underlined its commitment to driving innovation and excellence in global basketball by confirming the inaugural Test Event for Automated Video Solutions on March 24 and 25 in Doha, Qatar.

Taking place with the valued support of the Qatar Basketball Federation, who will proudly host the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027, the first-of-its-kind test event will help continue the exciting transformation, evolution and ongoing innovation shaping the future of the sport.

Powered by artificial intelligence, Automated Video Solutions (AVS) capture and produce game footage with minimum human intervention. This type of technology is central to FIBA’s efforts in expanding access to basketball content creation and boosting performance analysis, player development, and officiating at all levels of the sport.

FIBA's inaugural product test event for Automated Video Solutions marks a milestone by validating real-world performance with clearly defined performance metrics. It will serve as an essential evidentiary basis, establishing a pathway for industry technologies seeking FIBA Approval.

The AVS test event will be followed by the second edition of Tracking Solutions product testing on March 26 and 27. This builds on FIBA’s Tracking Solutions Approval Program, launched last year in Leiria, Portugal.

Tracking Solutions capture player and ball movement data during games and training. These include wearable devices worn by players, as well as camera-based optical solutions installed around the court. In both cases, they provide valuable insights such as player positioning, speed, movement intensity, jumping activity, and overall physical load, supporting player load management, performance analysis and enhanced understanding of the game.

FIBA's first Tracking Solutions Test Event was held in Leiria, Portugal last year.

All assessments undertaken at the FIBA Test Events in Doha will be conducted by industry experts, the Institute of Sports Tech Standards (ISTS) and Sports Labs Ltd. Automated Video Solutions and Tracking Solutions providers are invited to participate in the FIBA test events, with registration and further details available from the FIBA Equipment & Venue Centre via email.
