MIES (Switzerland) - Following the work of the Task Force for British Basketball Club Matters, FIBA has today lifted the temporary suspension imposed on the British Basketball Federation (BBF) on October 14, 2025, which had prevented BBF from fielding a men’s national team in FIBA senior competitions. As a result, Great Britain is now eligible to participate in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 European Qualifiers, starting on November 27, 2025.
BBF’s authority to license and recognize domestic men’s club competitions in Great Britain remains suspended. To that extent, and in order to ensure the stability and continuity of the top-tier men’s basketball competition in Great Britain during this period, FIBA has entered into a direct recognition agreement with Super League Basketball (SLB). This agreement provides a framework for the organization and governance of domestic competitions while safeguarding regulatory integrity.
FIBA, through the Task Force, will continue to work closely with BBF and all relevant stakeholders, including UK Sport and the UK Government, to support BBF in becoming a self-sustainable organization and to ensure the long-term stability and growth of men’s basketball in Great Britain.
