MIES (Switzerland) - The continued dedication and work of FIBA to strengthen its governance framework has been highlighted after being awarded A1 status in the 2025-26 ASOIF Sixth Review of International Federation Governance. Overseen by the Governance Task Force that was established by the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF), FIBA has attained the top rating for the first time after scoring consistently well across all areas of the assessment.
The aim of the ASOIF assessment is to assist International Federations in promoting a better culture of governance to help ensure they are fit for purpose - both now and also in the future. ASOIF's sixth review covered 36 International Federations and considered performance across a total of 60 indicators. These spanned the five key themes of Transparency, Integrity, Democracy, Development and Sustainability, and Control Mechanisms.
These areas included specific consideration and scrutiny of practices and performance around things such as gender equality, safeguarding, election campaigning rules, whistleblowing procedures and open procurement. The wider ASOIF report notes that the top governance category incorporates all International Federations who scored in the 210 to 228 range. This highlights how FIBA were one of only 14 of the 36 International Federations being assessed to receive the A1 rating. FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis stated: "We are proud to be included in this top governance group, and particularly since FIBA was noted for exercising some of the best practices in the industry. "This latest ASOIF review shows that we are making excellent progress against our commitment to ensure FIBA has a solid governance framework. "Strong and effective governance is something that underpins everything FIBA does. It is also a clear reflection of our stated values to be smart, progressive, open, responsible and together as an organization."
The ASOIF Council, in which FIBA is represented, authorized I Trust Sport to conduct this sixth review, with the consultative group independently assessing the responses and moderating the scores, with the help of independent experts.
