FIBA holds Americas Mid-term Assemblies and Board in Mexico City

    The three days united FIBA executives and National Federations to shape strategic plans and future development initiatives for the Americas Zone.

    MEXICO CITY (Mexico) – The Americas Regional Office of FIBA convened multiple Assemblies of the National Federations as well as its Zone Board in Mexico City between October 2-4, 2025, marking the mid-term of the 2023-2027 mandate.

    On Thursday, October 2nd, the sub-zone of Central America and the Caribbean (Concencaba), along with its sub-sub zones for the Caribbean (CBC) and Central America (Cocaba), held a full-day meeting where it received reports on the past-year activities of the National Federations and of the Regional Office.

    Key discussions focused on the development of youth basketball, the benefits of FIBA Plus for National Federations, and the expansion of 3x3 basketball. During the meeting chaired by FIBA Americas Vice President Patrick Haynes, Conrad Issa from Suriname was elected as the new treasurer for Concencaba, and Paulton Gordon from Jamaica was appointed as Caribbean representative to Concencaba.

    On Friday, October 3rd, the South American sub-zone (Consubasquet) held its assembly in the morning, followed by the Americas Zone Board meeting in the afternoon. During the Consubasquet meeting chaired by FIBA Americas Vice President Ricardo Vairo, National Federations provided individual updates on the status of basketball in their countries and discussed key topics, including the upcoming FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 qualifying windows, which will commence this November, and strategies to strengthen club competitions for both men and women across South America.

    At the Americas Zone Board meeting, chaired by FIBA Americas President Fabian Borro, the members addressed key strategies such as the development of women in basketball, both on and off the court, and the continued growth of 3x3 basketball as an area of focus for the remainder of the 2025-2027 term.

    The Zone Board also approved the proposal for a new competition system for youth across the zone, presented by FIBA Executive Director Americas Carlos Alves, which is due to be implemented as of the last quarter of 2026. The Americas Regional Office will release further details in the coming weeks. The Regional Office's report to the Americas Zone Board has also confirmed that the purchase of a new office for FIBA in the Americas in Aventura, FL, has now been concluded. The inauguration for the new office is expected in early 2026.

    On Saturday, October 4th, FIBA conducted its Americas Mid-Term Assembly, marking 50 years since the first assembly of FIBA in the Americas, then named COPABA (Confederacion Panamericana de Baloncesto), which had been held in October 1975 at the nearby headquarters of the Mexican Olympic Committee (COM).

    Honoring this milestone, the President of COM, Maria Jose Alcala, joined the FIBA Americas assembly and welcomed the 30 National Federations to Mexico, as well as FIBA President Sheikh Saud Ali Al-Thani. Andreas Zagklis, FIBA Secretary General, delivered a comprehensive speech emphasizing the need for continued growth of 3x3 basketball across the zone and highlighting the significance of the road to the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2026 in Berlin, Germany, and the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 in Doha, Qatar.

    The Mid-Term Assembly also approved the finance report presented by FIBA Americas Treasurer Usie Richards in the presence of FIBA Treasurer Ingo Weiss and applauded the planned relocation of the Regional Office to recently acquired premises in Miami, FL, in early 2026.

    The meeting was closed by the Mexican Government's representative, Jahir Ocampo, Director of the National High-Performance Centre, who expressed the willingness of the National Sports Commission (CONADE) to deepen the cooperation between FIBA and Mexico in the coming years.

    The next Americas Zone Board meeting is scheduled for April 2026.
