FIBA mourns passing of IWBF Secretary General Norbert Kucera

    MIES (Switzerland) - The worldwide basketball community was saddened to hear the news of the sudden loss of Norbert Kucera, the IWBF Secretary General, on Friday. Norbert Kucera started out as an international basketball referee in 1987 and officiated at his first Paralympic Games in Seoul 1988. He went on to become chairman of the IWBF Technical Commission, and was first elected as IWBF Secretary General in 2018, before being re-appointed to the role in June 2023 for a second consecutive term. "Norbert was both beloved and respected among the FIBA family and it's difficult to convey the deep sadness that overcame us upon hearing the news," said FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis. "His passionate, unwavering commitment to wheelchair basketball made a huge impact. His accomplishments during nearly four decades of service speak for themselves. "On behalf of everyone at FIBA, I extend my deepest sympathies to Norbert's family, friends and colleagues at IWBF." IWBF President Ulf Mehrens said the absence of Norbert Kucera will be profoundly felt at the federation. "Norbert was not just a leader within IWBF; he was a driving force behind the growth of our sport, a trusted advisor, and a friend to many," Mr. Mehrens said.
