MIES (Switzerland) – The international basketball community is in deep mourning for the loss of FIBA Americas President Fabian Borro, who passed away on Tuesday at the age of 64.
The Argentinian sports executive had been unanimously elected President of FIBA Americas in May 2023, following a four-year term as president of the Argentine Basketball Confederation (CAB) since 2019.
“The basketball family in Argentina, the Americas and all over the world is in a state of shock and profound grief for the sudden loss of Fabian Borro. Our thoughts are with his family and close friends at this incredibly difficult time,” said FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis.
“We will miss his capacity to always regard basketball as an instrument for educational, social and cultural impact. I have always admired his rare knowledge of club basketball and his talent to constantly produce creative ideas for the development of basketball. We miss our friend and his passion for each of the many wonderful projects he initiated," Mr. Zagklis added.
"It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that we receive the news of President Fabian Borro's passing. We have lost a passionate leader who deeply loved our game of basketball and continuously challenged the boundaries between tradition and innovation," said FIBA Executive Director Americas Carlos Alves.
"At this moment, we extend our heartfelt condolences and prayers to his family and friends, with gratitude and sorrow."
Renowned as a passionate, dedicated worker of basketball first and foremost, Fabian Borro rose to prominence within the sport as president of the Obras Sanitarias club in 2000.
He went on to occupy managerial positions at the Basketball Federation of the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area (Febamba), the Association of Clubs (AdC) – which organizes the National League of Argentina - and the Argentine Women’s League, always leaving his mark as an instigator of modernization and professionalism.
In 2019, he was appointed by FIBA on the founding Board of the BCL Americas.
Heartfelt tributes to Fabian Borro have been pouring in ever since the tragic news broke out on Tuesday from basketball federations and leagues as well as other sports organizations, from the Americas and beyond.
