FIBA Asia holds 2023-2027 Mid-Term General Assembly in Bengaluru

    Special emphasis laid on shaping international club competitions and development of National Federations

    BENGALURU (India) - The FIBA Regional Office-Asia conducted its Mid-Term General Assembly for the 2023-27 cycle in the Indian city of Bengaluru on Thursday, Oct 30, 2025. The Mid-Term General Assembly was also attended by FIBA President Sheikh Saud Ali Al Thani and FIBA Secretary General Mr. Andreas Zagklis.

    In his address to the assembly, FIBA Asia President Dr. K. Govindaraj emphasised on the importance for the FIBA family in Asia to remain united and committed to the cause of the development and promotion of sport in the continent.

    “The last two years have been indeed remarkable in achievements as well as impact of basketball as a sport in Asia,” he said.

    “We need to remain united and committed to the cause in order to see the sport we love and govern reach greater and deserving heights,” he added.

    In his report to the assembly, FIBA Executive Director – Asia and FIBA Asia Secretary General Mr. Hagop Khajirian laid emphasis on the development and consolidation of various leagues in Asia over the past two years in line with one of FIBA's strategic priorities: Shaping International Club Competitions.

    “The FIBA Regional Office-Asia took it upon itself the responsibility to bring a systemic change that not only consolidated the existing well-established National Leagues, but also provided a competition system that provided a merit-based pathway for clubs in Asia to the FIBA Intercontinental Cup,” Mr. Hagop Khajirian said while addressing the assembly.

    Mr. Khajirian also presented an activity report and programs carried by various departments in Regional Office-Asia.

    He also made a special mention of the achievements of the Regional Office-Asia during the past two years, while calling upon the National Federations to raise their levels.

    “There are areas and domains where we can have seen remarkable achievements in the last two years. We can all be extremely proud of this. But there are also areas where we have faced severe challenges. We need to address these on war footing to ensure we are on the right track,” he said.

    Mr. Khajirian also announced the initiative to be taken up by the Regional Office-Asia in a forming Task Force with Managers of various departments in the Regional Office-Asia to coordinate and help specific Sub-Zones overcome the challenges.

    The audited report and financial statements of FIBA Asia for the years 2023 and 2024.

    The assembly concluded with breakout sessions for select National Federations on three topics – Coordination with NCAA, FIBA 3x3 and National Federation & Sport development.
