FIBA Africa Board convenes for third General Assembly of 2023-2027 term

    FIBA Africa Board has held its General Assembly in Rabat, Morocco.

    RABAT (Morocco) – The FIBA Africa Board held its third General Assembly for the 2023-2027 cycle on April 4 and 5 in Rabat, Morocco.

    FIBA Africa President Anibal Manave opened the event and welcomed the delegates.

    FIBA President Sheikh Saud Ali Al Thani, FIBA Executive Director Africa Alphonse Bile, members of the FIBA Africa Executive Committee, and the Presidents of the African Sub-Zones were in attendance. FIBA Secretary General Andrea Zagklis joined the event via video conference.

    Over the course of the two-day meeting, Board members met with Moroccan officials and discussed topics related to the ongoing BAL Kalahari 2025 Conference.

    Recommendations and reviews of current, past and future events, including the announcement of upcoming continental tournaments, were high on the agenda.

    The Board reviewed several important issues, including preparations for this year's Continental Cups for men and women, to be held in Angola and Côte d'Ivoire, respectively.

    The FIBA Africa Board reiterated the need for strict verification of players' dates of birth in the light of recent speculation regarding age fraud, which led to the consideration of a task force to regulate this issue.

    Additionally, the growth of the 3x3 on the continent was also a major topic of discussion.

    Finally, the FIBA Africa Board confirmed the dates for the following tournaments:

    • FIBA U16 AfroBasket 2025 (Boys and Girls) to be held in Rwanda from September 2-14 and confirmed that the top two teams will automatically qualify for the FIBA U17 Basketball World Cups in 2026.

    • The FIBA U16 AfroBasket (Boys and Girls) qualifiers for FIBA Africa Zones 3 and 7 will take place in June and July. Hosts Rwanda and reigning champions Mali are qualified automatically.

    • The FIBA Women's AfroBasket 2025 will take place from July 26 to August 3 at the Palais Trechville in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire. The draw is scheduled for April 23 at the Hotel Azalai in Abidjan.

    • The FIBA AfroBasket 2025 will be held in Angola from August 12-24. The host cities are still to be determined.

    • The FIBA Women's Basketball League Africa 2025 (WBLA) will take place in Cairo, Egypt, from December 4-14. The reigning WBLA champions Ferroviario de Maputo and hosts Al Ahly SC will qualify automatically, while the remaining ten clubs will compete in qualifying tournaments to secure their places in the 2025 WBLA.
