FIBA STRATEGIC PRIORITY 1: EMPOWER NATIONAL FEDERATIONS
In 2019, FIBA established six goals to strengthen and enhance the capacity of National Federations. Various initiatives, both new and ongoing, are being implemented to help them realize their full potential. FIBA will continue prioritizing this area until 2027.
Goal 1: Boost Professional Leadership
National Federations can access a comprehensive overview of the planning process for driving basketball development in specific countries.
FIBA PLUS Programs

TIME-OUT 2.0
An executive program designed for elite basketball players, it helps them integrate into the workforce through hands-on learning and work placements.
Swish
A program for National Federations focusing on the importance of being compliant with integrity policies and successfully understanding FIBA's regulations.
WiLEAD & Adelante
These programs identify, educate, motivate and develop the next generation of female leaders in management and administration, also increasing gender diversity by creating new pathways and support networks.
Goal 2: Boost Grassroots Basketball FIBA is focusing on grassroots basketball with the following initiatives:
World Association of Basketball Coaches (WABC)
The WABC works to develop coaching standards across the world, growing the global standard of the sport. - Those looking to build fundamental coaching skills for grassroots level can access the WABC ‘Start Coaching’ manual. It’s designed for ex-players, parents, teachers and anyone with an interest in coaching basketball.
The WABC conducts regular courses to train instructors to deliver coaching courses worldwide and works with FIBA to deliver a series of online coaching clinics
FIBA Foundation
The FIBA Foundation promotes grassroots basketball for boys and girls aged between five and 12 through their Mini Basketball program.
Mini basketball conventions offer delegates practical and theoretical sessions on teaching fundamentals. There are also jamborees to give children a chance to play basketball in a fun environment. The aim is to also educate them on good health and wellbeing by providing organizers with the tools to help keep children active with enjoyable and playful activities.
Goal 3: Level Up The Game With the objective of improving the quality of basketball, FIBA's aim is to develop high-quality coaches, referees, and equipment – all essential for further player development.
FIBA continues to work closely with the World Association of Basketball Coaches (WABC) to deliver coaching courses globally. Virtual Coaches Clinics are also coordinated by FIBA Regional Offices.
Further investment is provided via the FIBA Europe Coaching Certificate (FECC) initiative and International Coaching Apprenticeship in Basketball (ICAB) program.
Additionally, FIBA and the WABC continue to development FIBA Coach Instructors, building capacities of National Federations to facilitate even more FIBA and WABC courses.
The quality of referees globally is also vital and FIBA has developed resources and manuals at the national level.
FIBA offers innovative services to National Federations, providing them with advanced technology and tools such as:
FastModel Sports: an endorsed partner in coaching and player scouting software, helping National Federations and clubs improve their effectiveness.
Dr. Dish: an endorsed equipment partner, offering high repetition basketball shooting machines.
FIBA Connected Stadium: developed in partnership with Synergy Sports, it supports National Federations and leagues in transforming how basketball is played, managed, and consumed.
FIBA LiveStats: in partnership with Genius Sports, it enables the capture of advanced statistics from courtside to enhance websites, scoreboards, broadcasts, and reports.
Goal 4: Develop The Next Generation of Talents Programs are being rolled out to empower National Federations to develop young players on and off the court. Players’ Mentorship Program Led by the FIBA Players' Commission, this new initiative offers comprehensive support to players on and off the court. FIBA Youth Development Programs Managed by the Regional Offices of Africa and Americas, these programs foster the growth of young male and female players across continents.
Players’ Workshop Renowned star players educate and guide young players during the U17 and U19 World Cups, focusing on educational topics. Basketball Without Borders A global basketball development and community outreach program jointly organized by FIBA and the NBA. It includes coaching instruction, life-skills seminars, and camps for players, coaches, and referees. Goal 5: Professionalize National Team Structure FIBA provides National Federations with support to help them professionalize their activities, offering advice, reports, protocols and publications. Medical Staff
FIBA supports Medical Staff by providing information sessions led by the FIBA Medical Commission. They focus on injury prevention, reporting, player protection and anti-doping education.
During competitions, FIBA Supervisory Doctors assist the medical staff of National Federations and Local Organizing Committees, offering urgent medical care and maintaining professional standards.
Fast Break
The ‘Fast Break’ publication helps basketball's medical personnel with healthcare issues and research.
Goal 6: Build Event Capacity
FIBA supports National Federations and Local Organizing Committees (LOC’s) in building their capacity to host events.
A FIBA Executive Marketing Program emphasizes commercial planning, with participants learning about marketing plans, sponsorship and game-day revenues
Other knowledge and support bases around anti-doping, medical and integrity related matters are also available, so LOC’s can ensure staff are informed and prepared prior to events.
