Olympic Men's Basketball Tournament

LOS ANGELES 2028 OLYMPIC GAMES

This will be held in July 2028 and will involve 12 nations. The FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 will directly qualify seven national teams and the *USA as Olympic host nation. 

There will be 12 competing nations with universality remains in place for the qualifying process for the Olympic Games, thereby ensuring that each continent is represented. The FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 will produce seven directly qualified national teams for LA2028 and the Olympic host nation qualified directly*. The remaining teams will claim their tickets through the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments.

A total of 24 countries are taking part, with 19 coming from their respective finishes at the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027, plus five who will advance via the FIBA Olympic Pre-Qualifying Tournaments. The respective winners of each of the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments will complete the field for LA 2028.

MEN'S OLYMPIC BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT LOS ANGELES 2028 QUALIFICATION

Qualification for the Olympic Games is through the FIBA Basketball World Cup. Universality remains in place for the qualifying process to the Olympic Games, thereby ensuring that each continent is represented.

The FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 will produce seven directly qualified teams for the 2028 Los Angeles in addition to the host, the USA*.

The four remaining places in the 12-team LA 2028 Olympic field are reserved for the winners of each of the four FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments 2028, which will take place from 26 June to 2 July 2028.

The FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments 2028 will include the 19 best placed non-qualified teams from the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 and the five winners of the FIBA Olympic Pre-Qualifying Tournament 2027. The winner of each tournament will qualify for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.

The five FIBA Olympic Pre-Qualifying Tournaments 2027 will take place as follows:

• one FIBA Olympic Pre-Qualifying Tournament 2027 for Africa will feature 6 teams from 17 to 22 August 2027

• one FIBA Olympic Pre-Qualifying Tournament 2027 for Americas will feature 6 teams from 17 to 22 August 2027

• one FIBA Olympic Pre-Qualifying Tournament 2027 for Asia will feature 6 teams from 17 to 22 August 2027

• two FIBA Olympic Pre-Qualifying Tournaments 2027 for Europe will feature 16 teams in total (8 per tournament) from 14 to 22 August 2027
